Grocery shopping, coupons, stockpiling, hoarding??

Here is my latest shopping trip. I got $220.95 worth of groceries for $108.39. I saved $112.56 or 51%. Although I have to go back to the store because something rang up wrong and the store's policy is that if something rings up wrong you get it for free, so that almost $8 I have coming back to me. Plus I bought some toothpaste for one of the kids, came home and there was a $1 off coupon in the mail. Of course I'm going to use the coupon. That means children's toothpaste for .49 cents. Not pictured 2 bags of chips and toothpaste. The kids took off with the chips as soon as I walked in.

Here is what I got on the trip today!

4 packs of chicken
4 gallons on milk
3 cans pasta sauce
1 box of pasta (FREE)
5 packs of razors (2 packs FREE)
2 toothbrushes (both FREE)
1 pack pads
2 boxes tampons
1 kids toothpaste
1/2 cake
3 packs of diapers
1 lip balm
12 bags of cheese (yes 12, they freeze)
1 fabric softner
2 dusting spray (one FREE)
1 soft scrub
1 bathroom cleaner
6 hand soaps
18 eggs
2 bags of chips
1 thing of TP

Not as good as those people on Extreme Couponing, but not bad either. My goal is to at least save half. I saved 51% so I'm happy with my shop. I also got $5 off my next pack of diapers. Which I'll be using when I go back to the store to get money back. You would also, diapers for $3.99 who can pass that up??

After watching Extreme Couponing last night I really got to thinking. I heard lots of people calling those people "food hoarders". I personally don't see it that way. Granted they go a little nuts on some things. I don't see a problem with stockpiling. But when you buy something like 150 mustards, then that's a problem. They expire and you will NEVER use that much mustard, not even if you put it on everything!

I stockpile! I stockpile things like diapers (I have 2 in diapers), laundry soap, TP, paper towels, dish soap, dishwasher tablets, razors, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, pads, tampons, can goods, clean supplies, and anything else my family uses a lot of. We are a family of 8 though, so things aren't going to last as long as they might for say a family of 4. Does that make me a "food hoarder"? I don't really care either way. I'm going to keep getting the best deals I can get on things that my family uses or eats. If I can save thousands of dollars a year, then I'm going to. All the haters can hate. Or be jealous, which is it are they really haters or just jealous of those who save money?

  1. I don't think anybody is jealous. They were/are food hoarders. They have mini grocery stores in their basement. Nobody needs 50 bags of potato chips that expire, or 75 boxes of cereal in the top of your closet. That is serious hoarding. I think you may be a little defensive because you do that yourself on a smaller scale.

  2. I'm jealous of those people's stockpiles. I'm not defensive, I said that I agree with some of the people regarding those who have 150 mustards, etc. That's nuts! The cereal etc I could understand, because depending on the size of the family they could go through that cereal quickly. A large family can go through a box of cereal per morning. If you can get it for free or really cheap vs paying full price for it, why would you not take advantage of that?? I'm not saying buy 75 boxes at once or anything, but buy enough for awhile for your family, if that's something you use a lot of.
I guess I do "hoard" food, health & beauty etc. items. If I can get something free or pay rock bottom prices for them then I'm going to buy at least 6 of those items. Why 6? Because there are 8 of us in this family, 7 of which go through the items. I guess you could say I "hoard" diapers as well. I have enough for both babies that I don't have to buy diapers for them for a month. I buy ahead, because if I only pay $3 for diapers vs $10 plus then I'm going to stock up.
Those of us that have large families tend to stock up because we are larger than most families and use more of that item. Pasta sauce for example, we use 2 jars of sauce everytime I make pasta so 10 jars is only 5 meals for us. I will always stockpile items that I get a great deal on.

  3. You don't sound "extreme" to me Jess, you sound like a mom with a big family! Stockpiling isn't hoarding but buying 150 bottles of something is ridiculous, especially when its going to eventually expire! But stocking up on diapers, toilet paper, etc is just reasonable...and super smart :)
